I have enough technical knowledge to start an ESP and don't want to. Marketing automation is a great business and there is much room for innovation.
The challenge with ESPs is that you are competing either with free solutions or with mature products. Mailchimp lets me send 12000 messages to up to 2000 subscribers per month for free. That is enough for the bulk of smaller customers. So, who will be your customers?

Suppose you want to use SmarterMail ti run your mail services. First, you need at least a virtual private server with dedicated IP addresses. You will need to pay for windows server license, and the smartermail license.
Once you do your installation, there are other details that make it messy. You need to ensure that your IP is whitelisted, to allow you to send emails to popular email service such as Gmail. You need to do some configuration to enable IMAP access. You also need to have a secondary server to ensure your emails work in the event that your primary server is down.
You will also need to have spam filters and antivirus software installed.
